Warehouses complex for canned food products

Warehouses complex for canned food products

Challenge

The model consists of a complex of warehouses for various canned food products sold to different retail chains. Once an order is placed, a forklift driver or collector walks through the warehouse and collects the products. The complex includes four warehouses with no racks.

The company wanted to optimize the picking time for forklifts and collectors while maintaining the same amount of resources — no additional spending.

Solution

The problem is a classical situation where products are not arranged appropriately, meaning high-frequency products are not placed close to collectors and forklifts. The solution was to develop a simulation model to test different product arrangements and find the optimal one leading to reduced picking time.

Outcome

The simulation resulted in faster picking times overall, leading to a redistribution of the pallets around the warehouse.
